Central Italy that tends towards the south with a silent and industrious soul; a long coastline that projects inland into a deep and beautiful Apennine. Green and blue are the two colors we can associate with this incredible region. Land and water; beaches and hills; cliffs and mountains. A dense network of National Parks that preserves a large percentage of the territory: the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, the great Gran Sasso National Park, and the Sirente Velino Regional Park. Almost the entire Apennine arch is protected by Parks and this is the fortune of Abruzzo for the maintenance and safeguarding of areas that are still wild and pristine. A region that unfortunately bears some significant scars due to the recent devastating earthquakes.
Abruzzo is a region of great cereal, vineyard, and olive production. Fishing is a fundamental piece of the economy and the Adriatic is a natural reserve that mainly hosts blue fish and shellfish, for which it is particularly renowned. The highest peaks of the entire Apennine chain are located in this region, such as the Gran Sasso with its 2,914 meters in height and the Majella with its 2,795 meters. The hills of the Val di Sangro and many others that see the prevalence of vineyards and olive trees are splendid.
One of the wines produced in the largest quantities in Italy is found right here. The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo remains today one of the most famous Italian wines in the world. There are 131 km of coastline along the Adriatic with important seaside resorts such as Teramo, Martinsicuro, Silvi Marina, Pescara, Tortoreto, Alba Adriatica, Roseto degli Abruzzi, Pineto, Chieti and Francavilla al Mare, Ortona, Vasto, and San Salvo. The farther south you go, the more wild they become, remaining tied to the ancient traditions of fishing with the trabocchi, fishing machines on wooden rafts.
Then, if you go up towards the Apennine, we find L’Aquila, a wound for all of Italy after that terrible earthquake. Then there is Castel di Sangro, which divides between Abruzzo and Molise, Popoli, Avezzano, Sulmona. We have already mentioned the three great National Parks, but we cannot forget the 38 State Reserves, Regional Reserves, and WWF Oases.
This land, due to its conformation, offers important DOP and IGP linked to the hills and mountains. Flat areas cannot be spoken of, as only 1% is considered such. Regarding the most important DOPs of Abruzzo, we think of oils with denominations that transcend the region and extend into Umbria. The Umbria DOP is indeed found throughout the regional territory. Among other prestigious DOPs, we must mention Farro di Monteleone di Spoleto and others shared with other regions such as Pecorino Toscano DOP and Salamini Italiani alla Cacciatora DOP.
As for the IGPs, we remember the Red Potato of Colfiorito and Prosciutto di Norcia IGP. Like in other regions, there is the White Beef of the Central Apennines IGP and the Central Italy Lamb IGP.
We cannot forget all the typical Abruzzo products linked to Slow Food Presidia such as Canestrato di Castel del Monte cheese, White Onion of Fara Filiorum Petri, Paganica Beans, Real Dried Fig of Atessa, Santo Stefano Sessanio Lentil, Campotosto Mortadella, Ventricina from Vastese, and Salsicciotto frentano. Another extraordinary product is the Red Garlic of Sulmona with its beautiful braids to hang.
The richness of tradition and history are fundamental elements that in Abruzzo have never ceased, and the people of these sometimes harsh but intimate and silent lands remain on constant guard over an enviable food and wine heritage.
All you have to do is discover our range of typical Abruzzo products for online sale! Happy browsing and bon appétit!
