Abruzzo: a timeless region.

Central Italy that tends south with a quiet and industrious soul; a long coastline that projects inland into a deep Apennines rich in beauty. Green and blue are the two colors that we can combine with this incredible region. Land and water; beaches and hills; rocks and mountains. A dense network of National Parks that preserve a large percentage of territory: the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, the large Gran Sasso National Park and the Sirente Velino Regional Park. The entire Apennine arc, in practice, is protected by Parks and this is the fortune of &' Abruzzo for the maintenance and protection of areas that are still wild and virgin. A region that unfortunately suffers from some significant injuries due to the last devastating earthquakes

Typical Abruzzo products

Abruzzo is a region of great cereal production, vineyards and olive trees. Fishing is a fundamental part of the economy and the Adriatic is a nature reserve that is mainly home to blue fish and mussels, for which it is particularly renowned. The highest peaks in the entire Apennines chain are precisely in this region, such as the Gran Sasso with its 2914 meters d&' height and the Majella with its 2795 meters. The hills of the Val di Sangro are beautiful and the many others that see the predominance of vineyards and olive trees.

One of the wines produced in the largest quantities in Italy can be found right here. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, still remains today, one of the most famous Italian wines in the world. There are 131 km of coastline on the Adriatic with major seaside resorts such as Teramo, Martinsicuro, Silvi Marina, Pescara, Tortoreto, Alba Adriatica, Roseto degli Abruzzi, Pineto, Chieti and Francavilla al Mare, Ortona, Vasto and San Salvo. These are places that the further south you descend, the wilder they become and remain tied to the ancient traditions of overflow fishing, of fishing machines on wooden rafts.

Then if you go up to the Apennines we find L'Aquila, a wound for the whole of Italy after that terrible earthquake. Then Castel di Sangro, which is divided between Abruzzo and Molise, Popoli, Avezzano, Sulmona. We have already mentioned the three great National Parks but we cannot forget the 38 between State Reserves, Regional Reserves and WWF Oases.

Due to its shape, this land offers important PDO and PGI linked to hills and mountains. We cannot speak of plains, because only 1% are to be considered as such. As for the most important PDOs of &' Abruzzo, let's think of oils with the denomination that crosses the region and extends into Umbria. In fact, Umbria DOP is found throughout the region. Among the other prestigious PDOs, we must mention the Farro di Monteleone di Spoleto and the others shared with other regions such as the Pecorino Toscano PDO and the Italian Salamini alla Cacciatora DOP.

As for the IGP, mention should be made of the Colfiorito Red Potato and the Norcia PGI Ham. As with other regions, the White Veal of the Central Apennines IGP and the Lamb of Central Italy PGI.

We cannot forget all the typical Abruzzo products linked to Slow Food Presidia such as the Canestrato cheese of Castel del Monte, the White Onion of Fara Filiorum Petri, the Beans of Paganica, the Royal Dried Fig of Atessa, the Lentil of Santo Stefano Sessanio, the Mortadella of Campotosto, the Ventricina del Vastese, the Frentano sausage. Another extraordinary product is Sulmona's Red Garlic with its beautiful braids to hang.

Wealth of tradition and history are fundamental elements that have never failed in Abruzzo and the people of these lands, sometimes harsh but intimate and silent, remain constantly guarding an enviable food and wine heritage.
