Do you remember the summer and September season of last year? Warm with some cool incursions and regular rain. A fantastic year regarding maximum temperatures and the humidity of the territory, and benefiting from it is certainly the agriculture of pre-autumnal productions and, in particular, grapes. Know that, if you are a fan of wine or even a collector, the vintage 2016 is considered by all producers throughout Italy as a historic vintage, the one you should stock up on.
In fact, the grapes were perfect before the harvest, with a balanced sugar content and acid gradient. No kind of disease or imperfections. It was said that the grapes were so educational and beautiful that they deserved to be photographed. Many producers define it as the harvest of the century and, surely, it had not been seen since 1997 such a high-value production. This value is attributed to all the Italian denominations, from the Alps to Etna.
The musts smelled like never before, and the aromatic component of the fragrances is indeed one of the characteristic elements of this extraordinary vintage. Low-temperature fermentations preserved all those scents and aromas. Not only that: even the secondary fermentations, malolactic, were useful to consolidate the liveliness and pleasantness of the still fresh wines. Excellent bases sparkling wines for the Charmat and Champenoise methods, great fresh vintage wines, rosé of class like we haven't tasted in decades. In short, a vintage that cannot be missing in a quality cellar.
What impresses is the stability and cleanliness of the products, the character and the mineral territory that the wines can express: 2016 will be a number that will remain in wine history. Distributors and international importers are already booking historic batches of Barolo, Brunello, Amarone, and other great historic Italian denominations.
The vintage wines are very drinkable and flavorful. Fresh, fruity, floral. Excellent whites from Alto Adige that from 2016 find all their aromatic power. Also very impactful are the refining wines that we will find in a few years with pleasures and drinkability that we have rarely encountered in other vintages. Therefore, for now, let's stock up on vintage 2016 fresh wines. For the other aspects, we wait with patience without forgetting about them.
