Four things you don't know about Organic that you should.

The Organic method is not just a way of farming to bring healthier foods to our tables, but it is a true philosophy of life rooted in deep concepts and solid principles. Those who cultivate ORGANIC know this well, but perhaps not everyone is aware of the foundations behind it. We’ll explain it to you.

Principle of Well-Being

Organic Agriculture must support and promote well-being of the soil, plants, animals, human beings, and the Planet as a unique and indivisible whole. Well-being must concern the totality and integrity of living systems. This principle is not simply the absence of diseases, but the maintenance of physical, mental, social, and environmental well-being. Natural immune defenses, the ability to recover, and regeneration are key characteristics of well-being.

Principle of Ecology

Organic Agriculture must be based on living ecological systems and cycles, working with them, imitating them, and helping them to sustain themselves. Production must be based on ecological and recycling processes. Nourishment and well-being are obtained through the ecology of the environment of each specific production. For instance, in the case of crops, this is the living soil; for animals, it is the agro-ecosystem; for fish and marine organisms, it is the aquatic environment. Crop, pastoral, and wild collection systems must adapt to the cycles and ecological balances existing in nature.

Principle of Equity

Organic Agriculture must build relationships that ensure equity and respect for the common environment and opportunities for life. Those engaged in Organic Agriculture cultivate human relationships in such a way as to ensure social justice at all levels and for all stakeholders – farmers, workers, processors, distributors, traders, and consumers. Organic Agriculture must ensure a good quality of life for all those involved and contribute to food sovereignty and poverty reduction. It aims to produce a sufficient quantity of food and other products of good quality.

Principle of Precaution

Organic Agriculture must be managed in a prudent and responsible way, to protect the health and well-being of present and future generations, as well as the environment. Those who practice Organic Agriculture can improve its effectiveness and productivity, but this must not be done at the risk of jeopardizing health and well-being. Consequently, new technologies need to be assessed and existing methods revised. Given the incomplete knowledge of ecosystems and agriculture, precautions must be taken. This principle establishes that precaution and responsibility are key concepts in management, development, and technology choices in Organic Agriculture. Science is necessary to ensure that Organic Agriculture is healthy, risk-free, and ecological.
