Every year, there is a database on organic products in Italy that directly surveys many thousands of operators and then compiles the annual BIOBANK report.
As we have often written in our newsletter, organic products are no longer just a challenge but a trend and a necessity. In fact, the report reveals unstoppable growth in all the facilities that produce organic products and those that market or use them in their business.
From the beginning, Spaghetti & Mandolino has aimed to give ample space to this world, which for too many years remained in the shadows. For some time, it seemed to have shifted toward a trendy fashion, and today, in the digital-techno-allergic-intolerant era, the desire for naturalness and health-consciousness has been reborn. And thank goodness!
The data is very interesting and unequivocal. Organic restaurants have grown by 68%, and alongside them, bars, bistros, pizzerias, cafés, temporary food spots, etc. Then, and this is where we come in, e-commerce platforms for organic food rank second with a 58% increase. We’ve gone from 152 e-commerce sites in 2010 to 241 today. Quite a good company!
A significant leap, offering hope and showing that Italy’s food culture is growing, is the 43% increase in entirely organic school cafeterias, from 872 in 2010 to 1,249 today. Purchasing groups have grown by 20%, companies with direct sales by another 20%. Organic agritourisms have grown by 19%, and organic stores by 16%.
The only area with no growth is organic markets, which remain at 221 in Italy. The regions showing the greatest absolute growth in activity are Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, and Lombardy.
