Organic wine: have you tried it? Discover what it is!

I organic products, and in particular wine, have gained increasing importance in recent years, partly due to trends and partly due to greater awareness on the part of the customer.

Today, however, they are much more: a significant reality of Italian agri-food, an important pillar in the market. Additionally, more and more consumers want to adopt a conscious and sustainable lifestyle.

Some companies had already adopted sustainable production policies and methods, while many others have shifted to organic farming and have given more and more space and relevance to "BIO", adapting their way of operating in respect of the environment and workers.

But what is organic? How are products considered BIO? Below we explain what lies behind an organic wine and why it stands out from other wines.

Organic Wine: here is what is meant by this term and how it is produced

First of all, it is important to know what Organic Agriculture is, which is adopted by various companies for the production of certified organic products.

Organic Agriculture is a sustainable development model, based on the principles of safeguarding and enhancing resources and respecting the environment and the health of the consumer. This model, therefore, has a 360° view of the entire scenario surrounding production.

Regarding wine, this cultivation method leads to planning the winemaking process and making conscious choices right from the vineyard.

Since organic farming believes in the potential of a chemical-free vineyard, it avoids the forcing of chemical fertilizers and systemic pesticides that, on the one hand, stimulate the quantitative production of the plant, but on the other lower the quality, impoverishing the relationship that exists between soil, plant, and climate, a balance necessary for developing a strong vine that produces healthy grapes.

Organic Wine is therefore just the fruit of this sustainable development model, a product derived from a cultivation method that has precise and detailed rules to comply with.

On March 9, 2012, the Official Journal of the European Union published the European Regulation 203/2012, which allowed for the regulation of the organic wine sector.

This regulation also defines the winemaking methods and allows the European logo to be displayed on labels for companies certified by an authorized entity.

Before the European Regulation, it was possible to speak of wine "from organic grapes", while now the designation of Organic Wine can be assumed thanks to the possibility of certifying the entire winemaking and grape transformation process as organic.

The correct definition of Organic Wine is therefore as follows: wine made from 100% organic grapes grown without the use of synthetic chemical agents in the vineyards; in the winery, winemaking must occur with limited use of sulfites and certified organic enological products.

Why prefer Organic Wine to regular wine: an ethical choice

As for the organoleptic characteristics, there is no distinction between a Organic Wine and a "normal" cru. On the contrary, there are significant differences in their respective production methods.

Organic Wine is a completely natural and genuine wine. Throughout the entire production process, synthetic chemical agents are not used. The vines of Organic Agriculture are grown in their habitat, around which spontaneous herbs grow and biodiversity flourishes.

The result of this process is a balanced grape, rich in all those typical characteristics of the territory in which it grows.
As a result, the wine derived from these grapes is natural, healthy, genuine, and of quality; it respects the environment, the ecosystem, but also the health of the consumer.

Many consumers are indeed starting to prefer the purchase of Organic Wine for various reasons. The companies that produce it are highly regulated and must comply with regulations, consequently making buyers feel safer.
Those who are environmentally conscious prefer this wine because the impact of organic grape cultivation is much lower compared to non-organic alternatives.

The respect for the environment and for workers, as well as the effort required to pursue this objective, make organic wine producers more committed in the eyes of consumers.

Thus, they choose to reward those who invest in this type of product, as it is driven by genuine passion.

Now that you know how much effort and work go into a bottle of Organic Wine, all that’s left is to give it a try!
