The town of Greve in Chianti, located in the province of Florence, immediately amazes the visitor with its landscape characteristics: combined with the microclimate of the area, they make it a real gem of the wine region to which it belongs. One of the peculiarities that most catch the eye is found in the hamlet of Lamole, where today's trip out of town is set: these are the terraces of the local hills, large steps — lamulae, precisely — that make the entire agricultural environment look like an amphitheater
.
Here, as Paolo Socci, who has been managing the La Fattoria di Lamole company since 1970, tells us, hard work has been done to restore to the wine the same flavor praised by Lorenzo de' Medici and the Carrarese geographer Emanuele Repetti, enclosing it in a production
Andrea Daldin, oenologist and local producer for the Lamole di Lamole brand, tells how since the eleventh century Lamole has been spoken of as a wine-producing region, with excellent wines and oils already renowned in Roman times: the company's 37 hectares of vineyard have unique sapling crops, planted starting in 1945 in the “Il Prato”, “Grospoli” and “Storico” plots that survived the phylloxera epidemics.
The Lamole area is colder than the surrounding area: precisely for this reason, the sapling method helps the vines to survive lower temperatures, “cuddling” them closer to the ground and allowing greater protection of the plant. As Susanna Grassi, owner of the I Fabbri company, also tells us, the terraces are combined with sapling plants to retain the heat of the soil and then transfer it to the plant, to allow it to use it during the night and achieve a perfect maturation of the bunches
There are now nineteen editions of the food and wine festival I Profumi di Lamole, created in the Lamola area to enhance the products of its high-altitude vineyards (up to the limit of 650 meters above sea level): homonymous with respect to the Cultural Association that created it, the festival stars the wines of “La Fattoria di Lamole”, “I Fabbri”, “Lamole di Lamole”, “Le Masse di Lamole”, of the microwinery “Jurij Fiore e Figlia”, “Castellinuzza and Piuca”, “Castellinuzza and Piuca”, Castellinuzza” and “Castellinuzza”.
On the occasion of this year's festival, held between 4 and 5 June, I had the pleasure of receiving the award of “Lamolese DOCG 2022” and of joining the collective toast of the producers, the mayor Paolo Sottani and the tourism advisor Giulio Saturnini: the appointment for all readers is scheduled for the first weekend of June 2023, for the 20th edition
