Edible battery: how genius is it?

An edible battery made from almonds, capers, and seaweed: the incredible invention of 2023 according to TIME!
We are proud to share that this innovation is entirely Made in Italy thanks to the brilliant team of Dr. Mario Caironi at the Italian Institute of Technology

How does this incredible creation work?

The riboflavin found in almonds acts as an anode, while the quercetin from capers serves as a cathode.
Activated charcoal improves electrical conductivity, and the water-based electrolyte is separated by nori seaweed, commonly used in Japanese cuisine.

The electrodes, housed in a beeswax container, feature contacts plated in food-grade gold, making the invention not only technologically advanced but also aesthetically appealing, with a touch of gastronomic luxury.

What are the potential applications?

The battery, safe to consume, can power small electronic devices, paving the way for edible circuits and sensors to monitor health and food conditions.

A special shout-out to Dr. Caironi and his team for this prestigious recognition!
