Edible battery: how brilliant is it?

An edible battery made from almonds, capers and seaweed: l&' incredible 2023 invention according to TIME!

We are proud to share that this innovation is entirely Made in Italy thanks to the brilliant team of Dr. Mario Caironi at the &' Italian Institute of Technology.

How does this incredible creation work?

The riboflavin found in almonds acts as an anode, while the quercetin in capers acts as a cathode.

Activated carbon improves electrical conductivity, and l&' d& #39 based electrolyte; water is separated from nori algae, commonly used in Japanese cuisine.

The electrodes, inserted in a wax container d&' bees, have contacts plated in edible gold, making l&' an invention not only technologically advanced but also aesthetically fascinating, with a touch of gastronomic luxury.

What are the potential applications?

The battery, safe if swallowed, can power small electronic devices, paving the way for edible circuits and sensors to monitor the health and condition of food.
