The history of &' Novacella Abbey is nine centuries long.
Founded in 1142 by Blessed Bishop Artmanno of Bressanone, l&' Abbey was born from a generous donation of farms and land from the ministries of Sabiona.

L&' Abbey has withstood the challenges, from &' devastating fire of 1190 to the Peasants' Revolt in 1525. However, it continued to grow, incorporating new parishes and expanding its sphere of influence in the
following centuries.In the 19th century, despite the temporary suppression by the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1807, Novacella reopened its doors in 1816, committing itself even more to training and to &' education.
In 1630, l&' Abbazia took a crucial step towards the production of quality wines by acquiring vineyards southwest of Bolzano.
