The history of the Abbey of Novacella spans nine centuries.
Founded in 1142 by the Blessed Bishop Artmann of Bressanone, the Abbey arose from a generous donation of farms and lands from the ministerials of Sabiona. From that moment on, its history has been marked by crucial moments, papal privileges, the protection of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, and much more.
The Abbey has withstood challenges, from the devastating fire of 1190 to the Peasants' Revolt in 1525. However, it continued to grow, incorporating new parishes and expanding its sphere of influence in the subsequent centuries. In the 19th century, despite temporary suppression by the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1807, Novacella reopened its doors in 1816, further committing to training and education.
In 1630, the Abbey took a crucial step towards producing quality wines by acquiring vineyards southwest of Bolzano, in the upper Trentino Alto Adige.
The wines of the Abbey of Novacella are the result of a perfect blend of climate, soil, and grape variety.
In the valleys of Bressanone, where cool temperatures and light soils create an ideal environment for varieties like Kerner, Sylvaner, Riesling, and Grüner Veltliner, fresh and fruity white wines emerge that capture the essence of this unique region. Further south, in Bolzano, the warmer climate and porphyritic soils provide the perfect environment for Lagrein and Schiava.
In Cornaiano, surrounded by lean, gravelly, and clay soils, Pinot Noir thrives, showcasing a unique and unmistakable terroir.
The wines of the Abbey are rooted in their origins, yet ready to embrace innovation.
The values that guide the Abbey of Novacella stand the test of time, focusing on the continuous pursuit of excellence in vineyard care and the production of extraordinary wines. The deep respect for terroir is evident in every nuance of the soil that contributes to the richness of the wine creations.
This respect parallels the absolute commitment to nature, revealing how only sustainable management can ensure the preservation of an unspoiled environment for future generations.
