The Cinque Terre: a journey through Liguria's treasure

The Cinque Terre, one of the most picturesque destinations in Liguria and Italy, are an enchanting stretch of coast located on the Ligurian coast.
Spaghetti & Mandolino tells about these magical places from a taste perspective with the desire to enchant you and immerse you in this wonderful journey.

The Cinque Terre with its nuances

The Cinque Terre are framed between the blue of the sea and the mountain tops. There are numerous terraces for vine cultivation that make the place even more suggestive. In fact, the area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, thanks to its unique beauty and cultural value.

Comprising the five villages of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, the Cinque Terre are famous not only for their breathtaking landscapes and colorful houses perched on the sea, but also for their rich culinary offer that reflects the freshness and authenticity of local products.

The five villages of the Cinque Terre are all unique, each with its own charm and beauty. Monterosso al Mare is the largest village and offers a beautiful beach where you can relax and enjoy the sun. Vernazza is a small fishing port, where the colorful houses are just a few meters from the sea. Corniglia is the smallest village and is located on the hill, offering breathtaking views of the Ligurian coast. Manarola is known for its colorful houses overlooking the sea and its famous Via dell'Amore. Finally, Riomaggiore is the southernmost village and offers some of the most beautiful views of the Cinque Terre.

The delights offered by the Cinque Terre

In addition to the natural beauty, the Cinque Terre offer an unforgettable culinary experience, with local products that result from a close harmony between the environment and ancient traditions. Here are some of the most typical products you can find:

  • Sciacchetrà: a renowned passito wine from the Cinque Terre with a fruity, floral aroma that recalls the essences of the Mediterranean scrubland, with various hints including dried fruit, apricot aromas, and spices. It pairs very well with cheeses with intense flavors.

  • Pesto alla genovese: one of Italy's most famous sauces, originating from Liguria. Made with fresh basil, pine nuts, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, Parmigiano Reggiano, and Pecorino, pesto is perfect for dressing pasta or as an addition to soups and appetizers.

  • Monterosso anchovies: an IGP product representing one of the most prized specialties of the area. They are caught in the Ligurian Sea and processed locally, often served marinated, fried, or as part of appetizers.

  • Extra virgin olive oil: of high quality, characterized by a yellowish-green color and a slightly bitter and spicy taste. It is mainly obtained from taggiasche olives, a variety typical of Liguria.

  • Ligurian focaccia: a typical bread from Ligurian cuisine, soft on the inside and crispy on the outside, often enriched with rosemary, olives, or onions.

Visiting the Cinque Terre means immersing yourself in a landscape that is a true natural work of art, and we have the duty and honor to preserve this World Heritage!
