Nadalin, the grandfather of Pandoro di Verona.

In Verona (we find ourselves in the city of Giulietta and Romeo, in Veneto), Pandoro is not the only typical sweet for the Christmas holidays, there is also Nadalin. A niche and less commercial product, which many Veronese "de soca" prefer because they consider it more tied to the city, as the former has now become a national and exportable dessert.

The origins of Nadalin from Verona

According to tradition, it was invented at the end of the thirteenth century to celebrate the first Christmas after the investiture of the nobles Della Scala who had become Lords of Verona and symbolize the greatness of the city. It is a slightly leavened sweet and not very tall, which is certainly the father of the modern Pandoro, with which it shares the same shape of an eight-pointed star, although less defined and precise.

The difference between Pandoro and Nadalin

Compared to the sweet born in the late nineteenth century from the hands of Domenico Melegatti, the preparation of Nadalin is simpler and faster, without those laborious mixes that characterize the leavening of Pandoro. The result is a less soft but very tasty sweet, whose flavor is enriched by the dried fruit that completes the glaze on the surface.
