Borgo Maragliano Company: divine scenery
Loazzolo is a small town of 380 inhabitants, nestled in the lower Langa Astigiana between the Alessandria area and the great Cuneo area, 430 meters above sea level on a hill behind Canelli. The Langa Astigiana represents a unique, enchanting place. It is a journey into Silence. Vineyards stubbornly clinging to high and steep hills, badlands overlooking the river, castles and towers where time seems to stand still. We are on the border with the Ligurian Apennines and on clear days it is possible to see the sea from the highest points such as the tower of Roccaverano. Territory never identical to itself that presents various landscapes depending on the altitude that varies from a minimum of 120 m. s.l.m. to a maximum of 845 m. s.l.m. Magnificent chromatic varieties characterize these places that change not only with the seasons but also with the transition from a typically hilly territory to a typically Apennine one of the highest-altitude municipalities, where woods reign almost sovereign. The mild wind that blows on spring days is the Marin, a sea wind that favors the ripening and aromas of the grapes. In this wonderful natural setting, 16 small towns are located where life seems
to have stopped.
The company consists of a vineyard area of 21 hectares, of which 11 are Moscato Bianco di Canelli, 8 are Chardonnay and 2 are Pinot Noir. The sea wind and millions of years of erosion by atmospheric agents have given Loazzolo an extraordinary microclimate and a territory particularly suited to the cultivation of vines in high hills. The real undisputed protagonist of this valley is the forest, which thanks to its miscellany of faunal and floral varieties represents an important basin of oxygen and balance necessary for environmentally friendly viticulture. The wines represent the expression of the territory and of the soil that in Loazzolo appears to be sandy, tuff, calcareous but free of clay and mineral substances, therefore extremely suitable for producing wines with a rich and elegant aromatic content.
Borgo Maragliano Company: family passion
The Galliano family has distant origins. In 1790 there was the first written attestation in the church records of the birth of Giovanni, founder of the Galliano family. In 1825, his son Domenico was born, who, like his father, settled with his family in Loazzolo. It was 1850 when Giovanni Galliano, then Marshal of the Carabinieri, married to Donna Enrica, coming from a wealthy Turin family, decided to buy the first land in the town of Loazzolo. Tough years. Poverty and backwardness were survived, especially at the top of the Langa hills where life was a daily struggle for survival. Giovanni was a strong and tempered man. He had traveled a lot and known the 'world'. This allowed him to broaden his horizons and his entrepreneurial nature led him to believe
in the cultivation of vines.
At the beginning of the 20th century, he owned 4 companies located in the Bormida Valley. But the Great War was just around the corner. And those years that Cesare Pavese so bitterly describes in his works also marked the history of the small town of Loazzolo and the Galliano family. Giovanni loses his son Carlo. Their wife, Teresa, from the Grea family, known in the Valley as stubborn and obstinate people, dedicated to work, does not give up. In the 1950s, she opened an inn in the village and managed the business on her own, raising two young children. As soon as a teenager, his son Giuseppe helps his mother manage the restaurant, which slowly becomes one of the most important points of reference in the valley. For years Giuseppe and his wife Germana dedicated themselves to this hard but satisfying work. The town, surrounded by woods and vineyards, is an attraction for tourists looking for good food and tranquility. Carlo, Giuseppe's son, studied Oenology in Alba and obtained his diploma in Oenology in 1990. He immediately tried his hand at the vinification of the main grape of the Langa, Moscato. In the early nineties, with the first productions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, the challenge of the Classic Method began
.
Today Borgo Maragliano is a family-run company where Carlo and Silvia, assisted by the precious help and support of Giuseppe and Germana, manage 21 hectares of vineyards whose production is vinified and bottled in their own cellar in Loazzolo. Young Giovanni, Francesco and Federico give a strong incentive to look to the future
