Lorea

Yurrita Group is a family business founded in 1867. Originally, it was dedicated to the production and sale of preserved or salted fish that was marketed from Mutriku, the company's headquarters, throughout Spain using horse-drawn carts. The original canning factory was located in the basement of the Yurrita family's house and was known as “Casa Mauleón”; this building remains the oldest among all those dedicated to fish processing.

The company was founded by D. José Miguel Mauleón and his daughter Francisca, who married Agapito Yurrita and continued the family business, thus forming the second generation; it was she who ensured the full entry of the Yurrita family into the canning and salting industry. With five generations and nearly 150 years of history, the Yurrita family is undoubtedly the oldest canning industry in the Basque Country and one of the oldest agri-food companies in Spain still in operation.

In the 1950s, after merging with Don Alfonso Yurrita Zumalabe, Yurrita e Figli opened up to the foreign market: exports were indeed a crucial step for the company's development during the challenging post-war years. This effort towards internationalization has allowed the company to currently have a dense network of clients spread across over 60 countries worldwide. Today, Yurrita e Figli is involved in the production of a wide variety of gourmet products; although Cantabrian Anchovies are the company's flagship and perhaps the best-selling product, the production also includes a wide range of artisanal croquettes and some traditional Basque culinary dishes.

Lorea is the main brand marketed by Yurrita e Figli. Lorea has several product lines: the Family Reserve (typical products of the family tradition), the Lorea Green Selection (BIO products that follow the philosophy of sustainable fishing and green industry), the Lorea Gourmet, and finally the Lorea Kitchen (pre-cooked dishes typical of Basque tradition). Lorea products are created artisanal using only the best raw materials: Northern Bonito, Cantabrian Anchovies, Yellowfin Tuna, and many others that complete the extensive Lorea catalog.
