Abbazia di Novacella

The Novacella Abbey is a place steeped in nine centuries of history, culture, and commitment.

Founded in 1142 by Blessed Bishop Artmann of Bressanone, the Abbey arose thanks to a donation of farms and land from the ministerials of Sabiona.

Its history is a succession of crucial moments. Pope Innocent II, in 1143, grants fundamental privileges, consolidating the Abbey's prominent position. In 1157, Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, under the influence of Bishop Artmann, confirms rights and possessions, establishing a partnership of great importance.

Despite challenges, such as the devastating fire of 1190, which destroyed the entire cloister complex, Novacella rose again with a new Romanesque-style building.

However, the 16th century brings with it the Peasants' Revolt in 1525, leaving indelible marks of devastation.

Novacella continues its growth in the subsequent centuries, incorporating new parishes and expanding its sphere of influence.

In 1630, a crucial step towards the production of quality wines is taken with the acquisition of vineyards southwest of Bolzano.

Challenges also abound in the 19th century, with the temporary suppression by the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1807.

However, in 1816, after the return of Tyrol to Austria, the Abbey reopens its doors and commits itself even more to training and education.

In the 20th century, Novacella joins the Austrian Congregation of Augustinian Canons in 1907, ensuring independence and continuity.

The wines of Novacella Abbey

For Novacella Abbey, this translates into a fascinating symphony in the valleys of Trentino Alto Adige, where the cool temperatures and light morainic soils create an ideal environment for Kerner, Sylvaner, Riesling, and Grüner Veltliner.

The result is a collection of white wines, fresh and fruity, that captures the spirit of this unique region.

Further south, in Bolzano, the warmer climate and porphyritic soils provide the ideal environment for Lagrein and Schiava.

In Cornaiano, surrounded by lean, gravelly, and clayey soils, we see our beloved Pinot Noir grow, a testament to a unique and unmistakable terroir.
