The history of Cantine Di Marzo
 

The history of Cantine Di Marzo begins in 1647, when Scipione di Marzo, fleeing from the plague in Europe, settled in Tufo, bringing with him Greco di Nola grapes. These grapes adapted beautifully to the sulfur-rich soil of the Tufo hills, giving rise to the famous Greco di Tufo. Scipione is recognized as the founder of this distinctive wine.

In 1648, Scipione began constructing a palace and historical cellars, marking the beginning of the family’s long winemaking tradition. In 1866, another ancestor, Francesco di Marzo, discovered a sulfur deposit, initiating the production of this mineral, which significantly supported local viticulture thanks to "sulfuration", an agricultural technique for protecting the vines.

Cantine Di Marzo consolidated in 1833 as the oldest winery in Campania, registered with the Chamber of Commerce of Avellino. After a period of dormancy, in 2009 the management passed to the di Somma family, descendants of the di Marzo. Under the guidance of Filippo di Somma and his children, the company has seen a significant revival, culminating in 2017 with the presentation of three Cru di Greco di Tufo. In 2023, the membership in the Federazione Italiana Vignaioli Indipendenti marked a further commitment to craftsmanship and sustainability in their wine production.

The Cantine Di Marzo enhance their vineyards by maintaining a non-invasive approach and preserving biodiversity, fundamental for wine quality. The vineyard is considered a living ecosystem, rich in plants, animals, and microorganisms that maintain a vital balance.

Sustainable practices such as cover cropping, which enriches the soil with nitrogen and protects it from erosion, and the introduction of sheep into the vineyards, which help to keep the soil clean and fertilize it naturally, are used. This approach not only improves grape quality but respects the environment, confirmed by the "SQNPI sustainable quality certification", which testifies to the commitment to sustainable viticulture and minimal use of chemicals.
 

Cantine di Marzo: Greco di Tufo DOCG

Since 2016, under the guidance of Ferrante di Somma and winemaker Vincenzo Mercurio, Cantine di Marzo has launched a zoning project to enhance the unique characteristics of specific vineyards of Greco di Tufo DOCG, including Colle Serrone, Laure, and Ortale. These wines, after additional aging in bottles in our historical cellars, express the evolutionary potential of the Greco grape.

Furthermore, the company maintains a collaboration with selected producers of Fiano and Taurasi who share a qualitative and respectful approach to viticulture. Through the cultivation of cuttings in its own nursery, Cantine di Marzo preserves a valuable genetic heritage, combining historical tradition with modern innovation to produce wines of excellence.
