Grimaldi: four generations
of winemakers
The history of Grimaldi goes back to the peasant roots of the Langhe, in the Talloria Valley, at the beginning of the 19th century, when wheat fields grew among the rows and every farmhouse had, next to the cellar, the barn where fine Piedmontese Fassona were raised. Nonno Giuseppe cultivated excellent Dolcetto grapes, the main grape variety of the Diano d'Alba area, which, after the harvest, he loaded onto the wagon and brought to the Alba market, where they were bought by the winemakers.
After the war, Giuseppe's son, Carlo Grimaldi, began to bottle under the family name. Work began to modernize the farm and rationalize the vineyards to enhance the varietal expressions of the native vines and raise the quality of the wines produced. With foresight and intuition, Carlo understood the importance that the Nebbiolo grape would play in Piedmontese and then in international oenology. It was in the early 1950s that the first vintages of Barolo and Barbaresco were bottled, which still represent the winery's flagship wines and make Grimaldi a historic reality of their respective denominations.
In 1967, the new winery was built in Groppone, still today the headquarters of the current winery. Groppone, from Piedmontese grupun, is a long hill surrounded by vineyards that are part of the Sorì del Montagrillo. Between the 70s and 80s, the Grimaldi bought Nebbiolo vineyards from Barolo in the town of Roddi, cru Becco Ambrogio; in Diano d'Alba, inside the Sorano cru; and planted the Becco San Biagio vineyard in La Morra. With the entry of his nephew Luigino Grimaldi, in the 80s and 90s, Grimaldi wines began to expand beyond the peninsula with sales abroad even beyond European borders.
In 2013, Elias, Luigino's son, came into play with the important task of continuing a century of winemaking tradition in one of the most suitable lands in the world for wine production.
For four generations, the Grimaldi family has been cultivating the best vineyards in Langhe and Roero, bottling the most prestigious denominations in the area: Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo d'Alba, Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba and Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba, Roero Arneis, Gavi, Moscato d'Asti and Langhe Chardonnay

Grimaldi wines: a combination
of passion and emotions
In more than a century of working in the vineyard, in close contact with the earth and the vine, the Grimaldi have learned to recognize the most suitable areas, which they have enhanced by planting the best varieties in relation to soils, altitudes, microclimate and exposures.
The style of Grimaldi wines respects tradition, enhancing the fruity and aromatic characteristics of the Langhe and Roero vines, whose vinification is carried out in a delicate way, without forcing, in order to obtain well-structured but ready wines, with excellent body and excellent drinkability. The grapes are transferred to the cellar immediately after the manual harvest and are gently crushed and destemmed while still fresh, in order to preserve the berries as intact as possible and to promote good must-to-skin transfers.
The objective of the Grimaldi winery is to promote the vine in achieving the perfect ripeness of the bunches.
The harvest is completely manual, calibrated according to the maturation times of the individual vines and individual plots, in order to bring a fresh and fragrant fruit to the cellar, capable of transferring the characteristics of the vine from the terroir to the glass.
