La Scolca is one of the symbolic companies of Gavi, which has always focused on the courteous, native grape variety that has helped to make it known worldwide.
La Scolca: synonymous with Gavi for generations
The estate was purchased in 1919 by the great-grandfather of Giorgio Soldati, father of Chiara Soldati, the fourth generation now at the helm of &' a company already looking back to the third millennium.
The past and the future coexist in this company that best combines the naturalness of those who have always lived in this world with the speed of those who look ahead with the foresight of courageous captains: never as in the case of the Soldati family have names had a symbolic meaning.
The name of the plot derived from the ancient toponym “Sfurca” or “Look far away” and the farmhouse that stood there had in the past been precisely a lookout post. The surname fully reflects the proud and tenacious character of the owners and their wines.
At the time of purchase, the property was partly covered by woods, partly cultivated with wheat. It was a well-studied intuition and in fact production soon became a primary technical and entrepreneurial activity.
La Scolca is therefore the oldest company in the area, due to the continuity of management by the same family, but at the same time it is the most modern.
Giorgio Soldati has proved to be a very valid and whimsical innovative interpreter: his is the creation of successful wines and sparkling wines without ever betraying his loyalty to the land of Gavi and to the courteous grape variety. But the most difficult task he took on, together with his family, was to maintain the leadership gained by the company over the years, further strengthening the image and fame of La Scolca with an all-Piedmontese will and the philosophy of the
highest possible quality.
La Scolca wines: timeless quality
The vineyards of La Scolca cover 64 hectares and, among the various plots, the one in the municipality of Rovereto could be defined as the “grand cru” of Cortese.
The La Scolca farm has its vineyards in the most beautiful locations of Rovereto, and its Gavi dei Gavi represents the pinnacle of the wine that is produced in this microzone. But this exciting result does not derive exclusively from the fortunate position of the vineyards, but it is also the result of particularly successful oenological and viticultural practices, which allow them, with the same raw material as the other vineyards in the area, to have an edge.
The cold vinification technique allows maximum respect for the bunch and maintains the qualities of the grape and 100% of the “aroma precursors” unchanged from the moment of pressing to fermentation. In addition, the system makes it possible to respect the origin of the grapes coming from various vineyards, of different ages (5-60 years), keeping them separated with a computerized system for controlling the flow of musts that keeps the fractions and origins distinct.
In the La Scolca vineyards, the utmost care and attention are given throughout the production cycle, from wise pruning, to very careful thinning, to “green pruning”, where necessary, in June, up to the harvest, which generally takes place a little' ahead of other producers. Furthermore, for some years now, the entire agricultural management regime has been following the dictates of biodynamics. The harvested grapes arrive in the cellar in a very short time and, after a &' careful selection of the best bunches, the real processing begins in the cellar. This is where his famous Gavi, such as the Black Label, are born. A great tradition of Piedmontese white wines.
La Scolca, thanks to its meticulous and careful processing, makes it possible to obtain a wine that has been defined as having an aristocratic personality, mineral and intense, persistent and elegant. A wine recognized and also awarded with The Wine Hunter Awards
