Becco Francesco Barolo DOCG 2006 - Magnum

The name Bricco in the Langhe refers to a cru in the French sense. In practice, it denotes a small plot of vineyard with the highest quality. Bricco Francesco is produced in the most beautiful vineyard of the estate: Rocche Annunziata in the municipality of La Morra. It is a wine produced only in great years, made from 100% Nebbiolo. Francesco is the name of the founder Francesco Costamagna's son. The soil is calcareous clay, and the vineyard is trained using the Guyot method with a planting density of 4200 vines/ha. The first harvest of this vintage took place from September 27 to 28, 2006. The red vinification was achieved with an 8-day maceration at 26°C. The aging, instead, takes place in Slavonian barrels for 24 months. Finally, it rests for one year in the bottle.

Acidity 5.5 g/l

Longevity: from 5 to 20 years. Optimal period after ten years.

This winery, now managed by Alessandro Locatelli, represents one of the historic realities of the Langhe. In particular, it is located in the municipality of La Morra and has about 170 years of history. Since 1841, it has produced and traded wines typical of the territory. Mrs. Claudia Ferraresi, Alessandro’s mother and granddaughter of the Costamagna family, took over the business in the late sixties. The company retains the most prestigious vineyards such as Rocche dell'Annunziata, Nassone, Pisotta, and Verduno. These are unique lands with an extraordinary mineral gradient that offers great finesse and expressiveness to Nebbiolos, Dolcettos, and Barberas. The Nebbiolo of the Langhe is the king of Italian grape varieties, and the two types currently cultivated are Lampia and Michet. The training form is always guyot. There are 14 owned vineyards, 6 of which are located in the legendary subzone of Annunziata. The company is supported by two superstars of the Piedmontese lands, agronomist Gian Piero Romana and winemaker Giuseppe Caviola. The winery is located in the center of La Morra and also has a series of very charming rooms in a B&B. Claudia Ferraresi, a painter, journalist, and art critic, as well as a Woman of Wine, created a Cultural Association called Ca Dj'Amis, which has curated the library and the room with ancient tools. Since 1976, she has established the “Ciao d'la Ca,” an acknowledgment from the association to individuals who, through their commitment, have enhanced the environment, traditions, identity, and roots of man. Among the main events promoted is the Salone del Libro Enogastronomico e di Territorio, held every year in May, involving the most important realities in the field of publishing related to taste and the culture of the territory. The association has established “I Ristoranti delle Tavolozza,” a platform for deepening and exchanging among the most significant Italian and international food and wine areas.

All the wines coming from the Rocche dell'Annunziata vineyard are particularly complex and broad. Of great expressiveness and elegance. A sober and sometimes austere elegance. Traits that are expected from great Barolo. This is a great wine, fruity with cherry jam, blackberry, blueberry, and black spices. Pleasantly balsamic with very elegant and fine tertiary elements from barrel aging like chocolate and sweet toasting, gentle tobacco. On the palate, the tannins are very soft, silky. The wine has a sinuous and intriguing smoothness due to its elegant consistency and excellent persistence. The finish of dried fruit is enjoyable. A great wine for aging.

Pairings. Excellent wine for game and very spicy and intensely aromatic dishes. Pleasant with great Castelmagno DOP with good aging and even blue cheeses. Excellent with aged Robiole di Roccaverano DOP. Barolo that accompanies great slices of Fassona Piemontese. Great with boiled meats. We also recommend it on its own as a wine that can brighten the company of a loved one. Very wide tulip-shaped glasses are recommended.

Serving temperature. Here we can also allow a slightly higher temperature, but it should never exceed 18°C. The advice is always to serve in wide tulip-shaped glasses at a slightly lower temperature (about 15°C) and wait for the wine to open up well, oxygenate, and start to release all its exciting aromatic components.
