The bay leaf, also known as laurel, is a dioecious evergreen shrub that is quite resistant and grows well in all types of soil. Its size can range from that of a small bush to a tree reaching up to 10 m tall. In the wild, bay leaves are mainly found along the coasts and near pre-Alpine lakes. It is indeed a plant that is extremely widespread along the northern coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea, from Spain to Greece and in Asia Minor.
A small curiosity: drawing from Greek mythology, the "laurel" is, among other things, the sacred plant of the god Apollo and therefore a symbol of wisdom and glory. In ancient times, poets were awarded a poetic honorific through a crown of laurel placed on their forehead, making them "laureates", a practice that has given rise to the modern custom of gifting new graduates a crown of laurel on their graduation day.
The laurel is used in cooking, to flavor meat and fish but also as a home remedy to ward off moths from wardrobes (it is indeed an excellent and more fragrant substitute for camphor). It is also used to prepare refreshing decoctions or those with digestive qualities as well as foot baths; when treated with alcohol, it finally allows for the production of a fragrant and aromatic liqueur with digestive, stimulating, antiseptic properties, useful also against cough and bronchitis. Often, it is also used as an ornamental plant in parks and gardens for the beautiful color of the foliage which, being quite dense, lends itself to the formation of hedges.
